Have you ever caught yourself thinking "I'm such a failure" after one small mistake? Or perhaps you've found yourself lying awake at 3am, convinced that tomorrow's meeting will be an absolute disaster?

If you nodded along, you're not alone. Our minds can become tangled in unhelpful thinking patterns that amplify our anxiety and deepen our depression.

Why Your Thoughts Matter More Than You Think

As a therapist and holistic life coach, I've witnessed countless clients transform their lives by simply becoming aware of these mental traps and how they maintain distress. Think of these patterns as old software running in the background of your mind – once you spot them, you can begin the update process.

These aren't character flaws or signs of weakness. In Depression and Anxiety based disorders, they're simply habits your mind has developed, often as protective mechanisms. The brilliant news? With awareness and practice, you can rewire these patterns and create lasting change.

10 Thinking Styles Sabotaging Your Wellbeing

1. Mind Reading: Assuming We Know What Others Think

Thought: "They don’t like me" Challenge: Ask yourself: Have they actually told you this? Or are you writing their script for them? Your Power Move: Challenge the thought with curiosity rather than certainty.

2. All-or-Nothing Thinking: The Perfectionist's Prison

Thought: "I need to get everything right or I've failed" Challenge: Life exists in beautiful shades of grey, not stark black and white. Your Power Move: Celebrate progress, not perfection. Even 70% is still passing with flying colours rather than failing.

3. Personalising: Always Taking Responsibility

Thought: "It's my fault things are going wrong" Challenge: You're not the puppet master of the universe! Your Power Move: List all factors involved (time, people, resources, etc)  and give yourself a realistic percentage of responsibility. Was it as much your fault as you initially thought it was?

4. Emotional Reasoning: When Feelings Become Facts

Thought: "I feel low, so today will be terrible" Challenge: Emotions are visitors, not permanent residents. Your Power Move: Acknowledge the feeling without letting it write your day's story.

5. Catastrophising: The Disaster Movie Director

Thought: "I messed up the interview – I’ll never work again!" Challenge: Your imagination is creating a blockbuster disaster film from a minor plot point. Your Power Move: Return to the present moment and deal with what's actually happening.

6. Overgeneralising: The Sweeping Statement

Thought: "Everything is going wrong" Challenge: Really? Everything? Even that lovely cup of tea you're holding? Your Power Move: Find one tiny thing that's okay. Build from there.

7. Awfulising: The Drama Amplifier

Thought: "This is awful – I can't get a doctor's appointment until 11!" The Truth: Inconvenient? Yes. End of the world? Hardly. Your Power Move: Rate the situation on a scale of 1-10. Is it really a 10?

8. Should Statements: The Pressure Cooker

Thought: "A good parent should calm their baby instantly" Challenge: These invisible rulebooks are exhausting you. Your Power Move: Replace 'should' with 'could' and watch the pressure release.

9. Compare and Despair: The Social Media Syndrome

Thought: "Everyone else is thriving while I struggle" Challenge: You're comparing your behind-the-scenes to their highlight reel. Your Power Move: Focus on your own journey. Delete Instagram if necessary.

10. Fortune Telling: The Crystal Ball Illusion

Thought: "My partner will definitely leave me" Challenge If you can't predict tomorrow's weather, why trust your relationship forecast? Your Power Move: Stay present rather than time-travelling to imagined futures.

Breaking Free: Your Path Forward

These thinking traps aren't life sentences – they're simply patterns waiting to be transformed. The magic happens when you start noticing them in real-time, like catching yourself mid-stumble and finding your balance again.

Remember, awareness is the first step to freedom. You don't need to tackle all 10 at once. Start with the one that made you think, "Oh, that's definitely me!" and work from there.
